(Pure) Practicing methods for chanting the sacred name

of a Buddha.

 

칭명염불 (청정)수행법

 

   The Great Monk Manhyon emphasizes to the monks and lay Buddhists

of Hyonji Temple that chanting a Buddha's name is the best method of gaining

empowerment of the Buddhas in the Absolute Realm.

 

   영산불교를 창설한 자재만현 큰스님은 현지사의 큰

스님들이나 신도들에게 칭명염불이 절대세계의 붓다의

가피를 입을 수 있는 제일의 수행법임을 역설하고 있다.

 

   "In reality we must believe in the fact that the Buddha abides in the Absolute

Realm.  If one has an immutable and strong faith and recites the sacred names of

a Buddha or a Bodhisattva, they will offer the practitioners of recitation all kinds

of compassions and extend the hands of salvation by skillful means."

 

   "실제로 부처님이 절대계에 계시다는 사실을 믿어야

합니다.  돈독한 믿음을 가지고 불보살님들을 부르면 염

불 수행자들에게 온갖 자비를 베풀고 방편을 써서 구원

의 손길을 내려 주십니다."

 

   The Great Monk's belief on the value of the recitation of a Buddha's name is

absolute.  It is because the Great Monk himself has seen the Realm of the

Buddha through chanting a Buddha's name and received approval of the

Dharma.

 

   큰스님의 칭명염불의 가치에 대한 믿음은 절대적이다.

이미 큰스님 스스로 오랜 시간 동안의 칭명염불을 통해

부처님의 세계를 보았고 법의 인가를 받았기 때문이다.

 

  "If one receives the awesome spiritual power and rmpowerment of the

Buddha, there is no worry to fall down into the Three Evil Realms.  Even though

one has committed a big crime, and is destined to go to Hell and to be born

again in an animal body in one"s next life, his grave karmic hindrance will be

cleared away and he can escape from the Three Realma."

 

   "부처님의 위신력과 가피를 받는다면 삼악도에 떨어

질 염려가 없습니다.  비록 큰 죄를 지어 지옥에 가고 다

음 생에 짐승 몸을 받아 태어날 수밖에 없는 운명일지라

도 큰스승을 만나 염불공부를 잘 한다면 다겁생의 지중

한 업장도 소멸되어 삼계를 벗어날 수가 있습니다."

 

   The ultimate goal in the Saha world is to meet the Dharma of the Buddha and

practice and study to liberate themselves from life and death.  If a being becomes

a practitioner and wishes to be liberated from transmigration, the Great Monk

stresses that he must keep his body and mind pure and clean, while reciting

Buddha's name.

 

   사바세계의 중생들이 부처님 법을 만나 수행하고 공

부하는 궁극적인 목적은 생사해탈하는 것이다.  큰스님

은 중생이 수행자가 되어 진정 윤회로부터 벗어나기 위

해서는 칭명염불 수행법과 함께 몸과 마음을 청정하게

할 것을 강조한다.

 

   "The great practitioners who have come from the heaven of holy multitudes

and are practicing with the goal of becoming a Bodhisattva must observe not

only the Five and Ten Precep[ts, but also take things that we eat such as meat,

alcohol, cigarettes, etc. as precepts.  If such alien substances go into one's body,

one's the Five and Ten Precepts, but also take things that we eat such as meat,

one's Three Poisons of greed, anger and ignorance will not be purified.  When

one possesses a clean spirit and a pure mind, he can be reborn into the Pure

Land."

 

   "성중 하늘에서 와서 보살을 목표로 수행하는 대수

행자들은 5계 10계는 물론 고기와 술, 담배 등 먹는 것

까지도 계율로 삼아야 됩니다.  몸에 이런 이물질이 들

어가면 탐  진  치 삼독이 정화되지 않습니다.  맑은

정신을 지니고 청정한 마음을 가져야 청정한 정토에 태

어날 수 있는 것입니다."

 

   The Three Poisons of greed, anger and ignorance that a human has are strong

obstruction factors that hamper us.  Ww cannot escape from attachment.  When

people are seen from the aspect of the Great Monk, it if understood that many

people commit karmic sin and fall into the Three Evil Destinies.  Half of them

do not even go to Hell, but wander around in the intermediate existence realm as

forlom wandering spirits.  The Great Monk stresses that this occuts because, in

most cases, attachment and lingering affections toward propetty and money

remain.

 

   탐  지  치 삼독은 인간을 집착에서 벗어나지 못하

게 하는 강력한 장애요인이다.  큰스님의 수승한 경지

에서 보면 많은 사람들이 죄업을 지어 삼악도에 간다고

파악된다.  그리고 그 절반 정도는 지옥에도 가지 못하

고 무주고흔이 되어 중천을 떠도는데, 대개 이 경우는

세상에 남겨둔 사랑하는 인연이나 재물에 대한 탐착과

미련이 남아 있기 때문이라고 큰스님은 강조한다.  그러

나 모든 중생이 탐  진  치에서 벗어나 계율을 지키고

생활한다면 진정한 대자유인이 되어 죄업을 씻고 극락

세계로 해탈할 수 있는 능력을 갖게 되는 것이다.

 

 

 

A great enlightened master who spreads the Realm and

value of the Buddha Dharma through Dhuta, that is,

through selfless practice.

 

나없는 공부와 두타행으로 부처님 세계와 불법의

가치를 전파하는 선지식

 

   In 2005, the Great Monk wrote <<The 21st Centure Buddha's Message>> con-

taining the news that he had seen and heard through chanting the sacred name of

a Buddha.  Through his book describing the Realm of the Buddha Dharma, the

Great Monk, who also spoke of the Dharma of the Buddha, wishes that the

Korean Buddhist sects will be born again.

 

   지난 2005년 큰스님은 칭명염불 수행을 통해 보고

들은 불가의 소식을 담은 <<21세기 붓다의 메시지>>를 저

술했다.  불교방송에서도 오랫동안 설법한 바 있는, 불

법의 세계를 담은 저술을 통해 큰스님은 마음 닦기에

머물고 있는 한국 불교계가 거듭나기를 기원하고 있다.

 

   "While believing in and following the true Dharma of the Buddha, our

Buddhism must be born again as a practical Buddhism, attaching importance to

actions.  If one has awakened to one's original mature of mind, he must advance

to the stage of a Bodhisattva and a Buddha by receiving the empowerment of

the Buddha and practicing limitless Dhuta.

 

   "부처님의 정법을 믿고 따르는 가운데 행을 중시하

는 실천형 불교로 거듭나야 합니다.  마음자리를 찾았

으면 부처님의 가피를 입고 가없는 두타행을 통해 보살

과 붓다의 경지로 발돋움해야 합니다."

 

   Re-establishing the character of Korean Buddhism in the 21st century is

demanding.  The Great Monk is personally showing the

true meaning of life and its value by practicing and shar-

ing, while spreading the true Dharma of the Buddha for

the lay Buddhists at borh the Hyonji Temples in

Chunchean and Busan.  In volume two of <<The 21st

Century Buddha's Message>>, that is to be published this

year, the Great Monk plans to reveal the Realm of the

Buddha that he has experienced through his practics of

chanting the sacred name of Buddha.

 

   21세기가 요구하는 한국 불교의 모습을 정립하는 가

운데 큰스님은 매월 두 차례 춘천 현지사와 부산 분원

에서 수많은 제가 불자들을 위해 부처님의 정법을 펼치

며, 행하고 나누는 삶의 의미와 가치를 몸소 보여주고

있다.  올해 내로 출간하게 될 <<21세기 붓다의 메시지>>

제 2탄을 통해 큰스님은 칭명염불 수행을 통해 체득하

게 된 불법의 세계를 더 상세히 펼칠 계획이다.

 

   While manifesting many sentient beings in early

Buddhism and the true character of the Buddha at a time

when the Buddha was saving the world, the Great Monk

Jajae Manhyon who has shown us the way Korean

Buddhism and Buddhists must walk in the 21st century.

He ie revealing to us the teachings of the Buddha Dharma and its true

value through Dhuta, namely, selfless practice as a new milestone of the

life and practice that all human beings living in this age should follow.

 

   부처님 재세 당시의 원시불교와 부처님의 진면목을 수많은

중생들에게 현시하는 가운데 21세기 한국 불교와 불자들이 가

야할 길을 제시하고 있는 자재만현 큰스님은 나없는 두타행을

통해 불법의 가르침과 진정한 가치를 우리 시대의 인류가 가야

할 삶과 수행의 이정표로 제시하고 있다.
