Yongsan Buddhism opening the way to become

a Bodhisattva and a Buddha through empowerment of

the Buddha.

 

 

 

부처님의 가피로 보살, 붓다되는 길을 여는 영산

불교

 

 

  

     Receiving approval of the Dharma from the Buddha in samadhi, the Great

Monk Jajae Msnhyon rose from his seat of a practitioner and made up his mind

to propagate the true Dharma of the Buddha across the world.  Having

renounced a worldly life to become a monk of the Jogye Buddhist Order, awak-

ening his original nature through Hwadu - a head phrase for meditation investi-

gation, the Great Monk established Yongsan Buddhism.  This is seen as the cor-

rect method of becoming a Buddha based on his experience of receiving

empowement from the Buddha through recitation of Buddha's name and of

attaining Buddhahood.

 

 

무아 속 삼매의 경지에서 부처님으로부터 법의 인가

를 받은 자재만현 큰스님은 지난 2007년 수행자의 자

리에서 일어나 세상에 부처님의 정법을 펼치기로 뜻을

세웠다.  조계종의 승려로 출가하여 화두참구로 견성한

큰스님은 칭명염불로 부처님의 가피를 입어 붓다의 자

리에 오른 자신의 경험을 기반으로 붓다되는 바른 길을

가르치는 영산불교를 창설했다.

 

   "In order to solve his doubts on the truth of birth and death and on the world

after death, he investigated Hwadu, then changed his practice method to recita-

tion, entered samadhi of deep recitation and eventually attained samadhi.  He has

seen the real character behind the Dharma realm of the universe by entering into

a deep samadhi and seeing the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas abiding in the

Absolute Realm as well as the existence of Hell, the deva realm and the

Westem Paradise."

 

   "지난 50년 가까이 나고 죽음의 진리와 죽음 이후의

세계에 대한 의문을 풀기 위해 깊은 화두참구를 하여

득력하고, 그 후 염불공부로 수행방법을 바꾸어 깊은

염불 삼매에 들어 비로소 시간을 초월해 있는 적정삼매

를 얻었습니다.  깊은 삼매에 들어 지옥, 천상, 극락의

존재는 물론 절대계에 계신 불보살님도 친견함으로써

우주 법계의 실상을 확인했습니다."

 

   The Great Monk who not only obtained the answer to his lifetime Hwadu, but

has also seen the subtle world of the Absolute Realm over the realm of expti-

ness through recitation of Buddha's name, has once again realized the limit of

enlightenment by one's own efforts.  He himself understood a new method of

going beyond the limit of the practicing method of Seon Buddhism that has

been taking the lead of Buddhism on this land for over 1000 years.  His goal is to

propagate this new method to all beings he encounters.

 

   칭명염불을 통해 비로서 평생의 화두에 대한 해답은

물론, 공의 세계를 넘어 절대계의 미묘 세계를 확인한

큰스님은 자력에 의한 깨달음의 한계를 새삼 인식한 것

이다.  1000년 넘게 이 땅의 불교를 주도해 온 선불교 수

행법의 한계를 넘어서는 새로운 방법을 스스로 터득하

고 그 방법을 만중생에게 널리 전파하고자 하는 분심이

일어났던 것이다.

 

   "Reciting the sacred name of Sskyamuni Buddha who perfectly possesses not

only wisdom, compassion and blessed virtues, but also the Three Bodies of the

Dharma, Reward and Transformation Bodies and exercises omnipotent univer-

sal ability is the best method guaranteeing rebirth in the heaven of the deva

realm and the Western Paradise Pure Land."

  The Great Monk established the Yongsan Buddhism Foundation last yeat.  He

also started to draw up the basic doctrines and code for faith and practice and

systemized them.

 

   "지혜와 자비, 그리고 복덕을 완벽하게 갖추심은 물

론 법신, 보신, 화신의 삼신을 갖추시고 우주적인 능력

을 자재하게 행하시는 석가모니 부처님의 성호를 봉창

하는 칭명염불이야말로 우주의 진리를 깨달을 수 있는

최선의 수행법이요, 사후에 하늘 극락세계까지 보장해

주는 최상의 수행법입니다."

   반생의 공부와 체험을 통해 확연히 최상의 수행법을

확인하게 된 큰스님은 지난해 재단법인 영산불교를 설

립하고 기본교리와 신행방법을 정리하고 체계화하는

작업을 하기 시작했다.

 

 

   "Human beings exist in the six realms in life and death.  It is true that human

beings commit countless karmic sin and exist in the Three Evil Destinies such

as Hell, the animal realm, and others.  They do not escape from the Three

Poisons of greed, anger and ignorance.  Yongsan Buddhism has shown how

human beings can escape from the Three Poisons through a pure practice

method and at the same time save them so that they will not fall down into the

Three Evil Destinies."

 

   "중생은 6도를 윤회생사합니다.  인간은 탐  진  치

3독에서 벗어나지 못하여 수많은 죄업을 짓고 지옥 축

생 등 삼악도를 윤회하는 것이 실상입니다.  영산불교는

중생이 3독에서 벗어나는 청정수행법을 제시함과 동시

에 삼악도에 떨어지지 않도록 교화하고 있습니다."

  

  Further, the important doctrines of the Yongsan Buddhism are to perform

one's filial piety to their parents, respect thdir teacher, love their nation and prac-

tice loyalty and filial piety as part of their life.  As a rootless tree cannot grow on

the land, all living beings must observe fundamental manners and repay one's

obligations and also have love toward their nation.

 

  이와 함께 영산불교에서 중요시하는 교리는 부모님

께 효를 다하고 스승을 공경하는 한편 나라를 사랑하는

충효의 생활화다.  뿌리 없는 나무가 지상에서의  삶을

살아갈 수 없듯 모든 살아있는 생명

들은 근본을 지키고 존재에 대한 은

혜를 갚아야 함은 물론 지상에서의

삶의 터전이 되는 나라에 대한 사랑

을 가져야 한다는 것이다.

 

   Besides these, Yongsan Buddhism stands on the

basic doctrines of strictly observing precepts, repenting

one's karmic sins in the past and loving our neighbors

with endless compassion.  The teachings of the Great

Monk includes the idea that one must cultivate a pure

mind through repentence and become a great liberated

man caring for others before yourself.

 

   이외에도 영산불교에서는 계율을

엄히 지키는 가운데 다겁생의 죄업

을 참회하고, 끝없는 자비로 이웃을

사랑할 것을 기본 교리로 내세운다.

참회하고 수행하는 생활을 통해 청

정한 마음을 다지고 나보다 남을 먼저 배려하는 사랑의

마음으로 대자유인이 되어야 한다는 큰스님의 가르침

이 영산불교의 기본 교리다.

 

   "We must take refuge in the Buddha and his Dharma.

We must also practice the Ten Virtues and actions fof a

Bodhisattva completely.  We must study the Mahayana Sutras, escape from the

cycle of life and death as a recitation practitioner chanting Sakyamuni Buddha

and live a life to be rebom in the Western Pure Land.  The Western Paradise

Pure Land exists.  Hell also exists."

 

   "부처님과 그 법에 귀의하여야 합니다.  10선도를 행

하고 보살행을 다해야 합니다.  대승경전을 공부하고

석가모니불을 봉창하는 염불 행자가 되어 윤회생사에

서 벗어나 극락세계에 왕생하도록 생활해야 합니다.

극락 있습니다.  지옥도 있습니다."

 

  The Grest Monk Jajae Manhyon attaches more importance to practice than

speech and exphasizes that studying scriptures steadily together with practice

and establishing a systematic knowledge of the realm of the Buddhism has

are the fundamentals of practice.  In this connection, Yongsan Buddhism has

taken the Sutras, like the Agama Sutra, the Ksitigarbha Sutra, the Diamond

Sutra, the Lotus Sutra and the Avatamsaka Sutra as the basic Sutras.  Whenever

he has an opportunity, he stresses that practioners should not ignore the study

of Sutras.

 

   말보다는 실천을 중시하는 자재만현 큰스님은 특히

수행과 함께 경전공부를 꾸준히 하여 불법세계에 대한

체계적인 지식을 정립하는 것이 수행의 근본임을 강조

한다.  그 일환으로 아함경, 지장경, 금강경, 화엄경, 법

화경 등과 같은 경전들을 영산불교의 소의경전으로 삼

고 기회가 있을 때마다 수행자들에게 경전 공부를 소홀

히 하지 말  것을 강조한다.
