If it is true, I think that the person whom the
sentient beings who have committed a lot of
sin can rely on is only the Buddha. Taking
this opportrnity, could you please explain the
salvation power of the Buddha in detail?
▶ I will speak about myself according to what I,
Jajae Manhyon, have attained through practice.
We have lived, committing numerous sins during
the countless kalpas of lives. The evil karma that
we have committed will be all reflected in our
spiritual bodies. All evil karma that has been
reflected in us, and that will be reflected in the
future is called karmic hindrance(業障). Karmic
hindrance is the culprit that interrupts a happy life
and gives sufferings. Unfortunately, we sentient
beings carry on the back karmic hindrance as
great as a high mountain all the time. If we do not
eliminate the karmic hindrance, we cannot be
freed from the sufferings of transmigration.
Therefore, we can tell that elimination of karmic
hindrance is a process of making the spiritual
bodies clean. It is the purpose of all Buddhists to
escape from the sufferings of transmigration and
proceed to the realm of liberation. The purpose of
practice in Buddhism is also the same.
Meanwhile, if one does not receive all karmic
retribution, karmic hindrance that has been
implanted in one's spiritual bodies will never be
annihilated except for the elimination of karmic
hindrance by virtue of empowerment of the
Buddha only. This is no other than the salvation
power that only the Buddha possesses. This is the
unique and rare ability of the Buddha that can
save the human beings. No other leader of sny
other religion, no enlightenment seeking
practitioner, nor super human possesses this
ability. Thus it is said that only Buddhism is the
real religion of salvation. As the Buddha who
possesses this ability abides in true suchness in
the Absolute Realm in Selflessness, real salvation
is possible.
You, the Great Monk, has first declared
real existence of the Buddha, "The Buddha
abides in true suchness in the Absolute
Realm in Selflessness." Could you please tell
us where the Buddha who entered nirvana
2600 years or so ago has gone, and in what
appearance he does exist?
▶This is an important and valid question. The
Buddha attained Buddhahood for the first time as
a human nayuta, asankhya, and countless kalpas
ago; he has come to the saha world many times as
a human during that long time to teach and save
sentient beings. The story of the Buddha having
attained Buddhahood from the immeasurable past
(久遠實成) have clearly been stated in the Chapter
on Duration of Life of the Tathagata; I confirm
that all these are the true facts.
2600 years ago, the BUddha came to the land of
India, attained Buddhahood, has taught and saved
sentient beings for 45 years, and entered great
nirvana under the twin sala trees. Then where has
the Buddha who has entered nirvana gone? No
one has told us about this issue to date. Present
Buddhist circles understand that he has returned
to emptiness (空) that is the original nature of the
universe, and to tranquil extinction; and that he
has not left behind any existence with form. But
this is not true. It is definitely an incorrect
statement. When the Buddha entered great
nirvana, the four spiritual bodies made of the
mass of light have come out of his physical body.
The spiritual bodies of the Buddha in light mass
that came out of his physical body have combined
into his Reward Body Buddha (Nosana Buddha)
made of the Immeasurable Light who abides in
true suchness in the Absolute Realm in
Selflessness, namely in the Lotus Treasury Realm
that is the most profound dimension in the
universe. He dwells there even now.
Consequently, the Buddha did not become extinct
through all eternity and is still alive.
If the Buddha decides that he will come to the
saha world as a human again, his four spiritual
bodies will come out of his Reward Body Buddha;
will meet with his parents who have a close tie
with him; and will be born into a human body.

그렇다면
죄를 많이 지은 중생들이 의지할 곳은 부처
님 밖에 없다고 생각됩니다. 이 기회에 부처님의 구원
력에 대해 구체적으로 설명해 주시기 바랍니다.
▶나 자재만현이 증득한 바에 따라, 나의 말을 해보
겠습니다. 우리는 다겁생 동안 수많은 죄를 지으면서 살
아왔습니다. 우리가 지은 이 악업은 모두 우리 영혼체에
반영이 됩니다. 이렇게 우리에게 반영된 또 미래에 반영
될 모든 악업들을 업장(業障)이라고 합니다. 업장은 행
복한 삶을 가로막고 고통을 주는 주범입니다. 안타깝게
도 우리 중생은 한결같이 태산만한 업장을 짊어지고 있
습니다. 이 업장을 소멸하지 않으면 우리는 윤회의 고통
에서 벗어날 수가 없습니다. 그렇기 때문에 업장소멸은
영혼체를 깨끗하게 만드는 과정이라 할 수 있습니다. 윤
회의 고통을 벗어나 해탈계로 가는 것은 우리 모든 불자
들의 목표입니다. 불교 수행은 목적도 그러합니다.
그렇지만 영혼체에 심어진 이 업장은 모든 과보를 받
지 않고서는 절대로 소멸되지 않습니다. 오직 부처님의
가피에 의한 업장소멸 이외에는 말이죠. 이것이 바로 부
처님만이 지니신 우주적 구원력의 정체입니다. 이는 인
류를 구원할 수 있는 부처님만의 고유하고도 희유한 능
력입니다. 어떤 다른 종교의 교주나 그 어떤 도인과 초
인도 할 수 없습니다. 그래서 불교만이 실질적인 구원의
종교라 말하는 겁니다. 이런 능력을 지니신 부처님께서
무아 속 절대계에 여여히 존재하고 계시기에 실질적인
구원이 가능하게 됩니다..
큰스님께서는 "부처님은 무아 속 절대계에 여여히
계신다"고 제1성으로 부처님 실존을 선언하셨습니
다. 그러면 2600여년 전 반열반하신 부처님은 어디로
가셔서 어떤 모습으로 실존하고 계시는지요?
▶ 참으로 중요하고도 좋은 질문입니다. 부처님께서
는 나유타 아승기 무량겁 전에 인류 최초로 부처님이 되
셨고, 그 동안 중생 교화를 위해 여러 차례 사바세계에
몸 받아 오셨습니다. 부처님의 구원실성(久遠實成)에 관
한 내용은 법화경 여래수량품에 분명히 나와 있는데, 이
것은 모두 사실임을 확인합니다.
지금으로부터 2600여년 전에도 부처님께서는 인도
땅에 오셔서 다시금 붓다를 이루시고 45년간 중생을 교
화하시다가 두 그루의 사라나무 아래서 대열반에 드셨
습니다. 그럼 열반에 드신 부처님은 어디로 가셨을까
요? 지금까지 어느 누구도 이 문제에 대해 이야기 해 주
지 못했습니다. 지금 불교계에서는 그저 우주 본성인 공
(空)으로, 적멸로 회귀하여 어떤 유형적 존재도 남기지
않는 것으로 알고 있습니다. 그러나 그렇지 않습니다.
이는 분명히 잘못된 내용입니다. 부처님께서 대열반에
드실 때 육신으로부터 네 개의 빛덩어리 영혼체가 빠져
나왔습니다. 육신에서 빠져나온 부처님의 빛덩어리 영
혼체는 우주의 가장 심원한 차원인 무아 속 절대계, 즉
연화장세계에 여여히 계시는 무량광 빛의 몸인 당신의
보신불(노사나불)과 하나로 계합이 되었습니다. 지금도
그리 계십니다. 그러므로 부처님께서는 영원히 멸도하
지 않으시고 살아 계십니다.
부처님께서 다시 사바세계에 몸 받아 오시겠다고 판
단하시면 이 보신불에서 당신의 영혼체가 빠져나와 인
연 있는 부모를 만나 다시 인간의 몸에서 태어나실 것입
니다.
